Our house dog, Sarah was kidnapped in November 2007 from Sarah House. An animal control officer phoned Debbie, our House Manager, to tell her that Sarah had been found roaming the streets not to far off from where she had been taken. Debbie went over to the county shelter on Overpass Road and found Sarah there, happy and homesick!

Sarah had become a member of the Sarah House family and when she disappeared, the residents and staff were very, very worried. Though the disappearance brought about such concern, it also brought about unity. All conversations by the caregivers and residents at Sarah House circled around the missing dog and they waited for any word about her whereabouts. When word finally came, there was a genuine sense of relief at her return; especially, from Carl, one of our residents. Carl and Sarah had developed a very close relationship. When Carl found her curled up next to him one morning their love for each other was confirmed. “If they take the dog, this time they are going to have to take Carl with it”, Debbie had said, when interviewed by the Santa Barbara News Press.
